These 10 Newfoundland Trails Will Make You Happy and Free when you hike them. Newfoundland is a beautiful place to visit, especially if you’re a hiking enthusiast. Numerous trails throughout the province will make your trip memorable and give you some of the best views in Newfoundland. From short and easy walks requiring little preparation to more challenging hikes that require a lot of planning, there’s something for everyone. The following list features ten of my favourite trails in Newfoundland:
Father Troy’s Trail
Father Troy’s Trail ran from Torbay to Flatfroc. This trail is considered one of the best hiking trails in Newfoundland because it offers a breathtaking view of the ocean and an opportunity to learn about local history.
The trail is over 13 km long but takes about 4 hours to complete. You can hike this trail alone or with a group of as many as 20 people at once. The trail is open all year. However, the best time to hike this trail is in the spring, summer and fall if you want to see everything this trail offers.
You should bring water with you. It’ll help keep your body cool during hot days/nights when hiking outside during the summer or spring and fall. This trail can be challenging, but it is worth it. The best time for hiking this trail is during spring and fall because there are fewer bugs and not as hot outside. Walking on this trail is recommended for people who are not comfortable with heights. The Path has a lot of steep hills and cliffs that can be dangerous if you’re not careful while hiking them. However, this trail is easy to follow, with many sceneries and turns along the way.
Gros Morne Mountain Trail
Gros Morne Mountain Trail is over 18 km of loop trail that hikers can do in 7 hours. This trail is suitable for families, as it’s relatively easy to navigate. It’s also very accessible to those who are not used to hiking, as well as those who are experienced hikers.
At the top of Gros Morne National Park (pc.gc.ca), you’ll get great views of the Tablelands and the park below you. There are also multiple viewpoints along the trail that you can stop at to take in some great views. The hike is steep in some places, but it’s not too difficult if you stay on the trail.
You’ll want to bring plenty of water, as summer can get very hot. If you’re not used to hiking, it’s a good idea to start early in the morning to get back before nightfall. Otherwise, it might be too hot for your comfort level by mid-day.
The trail is well-marked so that you won’t get lost. However, bringing a map with you in case of an emergency or if you need to take a break from hiking for any reason is essential.
North Head Trail
North Head Trail is located around Signal Hill. This hike takes about an hour to complete. The trail starts at the parking lot on top of Signal Hill and winds its way around the cliffs of this historic site. It’s a relatively easy hike, but there are some steep drop-offs along the way, so make sure you’re careful. The views of the ocean are breathtaking and make this hike worthwhile. In addition, it’s a great place to watch the sunset.
This trail is excellent if you’re looking for a quick hike. It’s only about an hour long, so it’s perfect if you’re trying to get out of the house and enjoy some fresh air. The view from this trail is incredible, and there are plenty of opportunities to stop along the way and take pictures.
The trail is well-maintained and easy to hike, so it’s perfect for families. You’ll find plenty of places along the way to stop and enjoy the view or take pictures. It can sometimes be crowded, but that doesn’t detract from how beautiful this trail is.
La Manche Trail
La Manche Trail is an over 4 km trail located in La Manche Park. The trail can be completed as a one-way hike, but many people hike it as an out-and-back. The trail is primarily flat, with some steep sections and a suspension bridge to cross.
This trail is a good choice for families with young children, as there are many places to stop along the way for pictures or snacks. In addition, the trail passes through a beautiful forest that provides shade on hot days. La Manche Trail is one of the easier trails in La Manche Park and is perfect for beginners.
The trail is well-maintained, but bring a pair of good walking shoes because there are some rocky areas. You’ll also want to wear sunscreen and bug spray in the summertime as it can get quite hot.
Skerwink Trail
The Skerwink Trail spans over 4.5 kilometres and takes you through the woods and along the shoreline of Port Rexton and Trinity. You can start in Port Rexton, giving you access to other paths if you want to extend your hike or explore the area. The trail is easy to follow, with markers and other points of interest which let you know when you reach a specific location.
You can stop along the way if you need a break. Depending on how fast you go, you can walk the trail for about two hours. The scenery is beautiful, and there are many things to see along the way, including wildflowers, wildlife and sea stacks.
The trail is moderately difficult and offers some great views of the coastal surroundings when it’s not covered by fog or clouds. Cobbler’s Path, Torbay
Cobbler’s Path is a beautiful trail that leads to lookouts and coastal sceneries along the coastline. It’s easy to hike, with just over 11.9 Kilometres of trails. It will only take you a couple of hours to complete.
When you are hiking this trail, start early in the day and take your time to enjoy the breathtaking views. The trail is easy to hike and a great way to spend the day.
The trail is relatively hilly and long. However, there are many places where you can stop for a picnic or take in ocean views. The Cobbler’s Path is on the west coast of Newfoundland, so it has some amazing views of icebergs floating by.
Chance Cove Coastal Hiking Trail
The Chance Cove Coastal Hiking Trail is over 3.6 km long in Chance Cove. The trail will take you along a well-marked path through thick forest and over small hills, with views of the ocean and small islands as you go.
You will be hiking along the rugged coastline, with rocky sections that lead down to an amazing beach where you’ll find some great spots to sit and relax and watch the wave crash on the shore.
The trail is a loop, so you can start and end at the same place. You should bring hiking boots or shoes with good traction on them, as some sections of the trail are rocky and uneven.
You’ll also want to bring water and snacks, as no food or drink stops are along the trail. You don’t need any special equipment, although a camera will come in handy if you want to take some pictures of the fantastic scenery.
