Newfoundland Best Fish and Chips

The Duke of Duckworth

We threw down the gauntlet: Settle it once and for all best fish and chips in Newfoundland, and WHERE? On Our Facebook Page

You weighed in, and the debate was everything we hoped for passionate, specific, and very, very Newfoundland. We tallied every vote, and here are your winners, ranked by count. Six spots rose above the rest. The rest of the honourable mentions get their nod at the bottom because in Newfoundland, everyone has a fish-and-chips opinion, and they’re all worth hearing.

  1. Duke of Duckworth St. John’s (14 votes)

The runaway champion. Duke of Duckworth on Duckworth Street in downtown St. John’s took the most votes by a clear margin “best fish and chips on the planet” was the energy. The classic English pub at 325 Duckworth Street is a local institution: fresh, flaky cod in a light batter with fries done the traditional Newfoundland way dressing and gravy, no exceptions. Claimed, owner-verified, and carrying a Popular badge in our directory.

  1. Keith’s Diner Goulds (11 votes)

The Goulds legend came in a strong second. Keith’s Diner at 419 Main Road has been feeding the south end of St. John’s for nearly 50 years, and the loyalty shows half your mentions read like love letters. Classic diner comfort, owner-verified and Popular in our directory.

  1. Leo’s St. John’s (10 votes)

A Freshwater Road staple since 1954, and your votes put it third “Leo’s for sure, best in St John’s” was a common refrain. Mom-and-son-run, generous portions, crispy batter, and that unmistakable local flavour. (Leo’s isn’t in our directory yet listing coming soon.)

  1. Chafe’s Landing Petty Harbour-Maddox Cove (6 votes)

The road-trip pick. Chafe’s Landing at 11 Main Road in Petty Harbour-Maddox Cove is worth the drive down the harbour road and it’s where Anthony Bourdain ate his first Newfoundland meal (deep-fried cod and homemade fries). Claimed, owner-verified, and Popular in our directory.

  1. By the Beach St. Philip’s (3 votes)

The hidden gem of the list. This St. Philip’s spot came up again and again as the place you don’t know about until someone takes you there.

  1. Sansome & Sons Hillgrade (3 votes)

Twillingate-area favourite. One voter called it “no contest,” the north-of-the-province contender that held its own against the St. John’s heavyweights.

Honourable mentions

King Cod, Off the Hook (Deer Lake), Whaler’s Station (Red Bay, Labrador), and the Squid Jigger (Calvert) each pulled multiple votes. Bangbelly Bistro (Fogo Island), the Squid Jigger faithful, Station Diner (Holyrood), Da Birds Eye (St. Bride’s), Myrtles on the Bay (Lark Harbour), Petty Harbour Public House, Skipper’s (Bonavista), Tiny’s, Frontier Restaurant (Wiltondale), Water Witch, Salvaje Longhouse, By Da Sea (Portugal Cove), Quidi Vidi Brewing, Ragged Rocks Gastropub, and Rod’s (Clarenville) all got their shout-outs.
