The Gros Morne Mountain trail is the most challenging and one of the most rewarding hikes in Atlantic Canada. It spans 16 kilometres return, requires a whole day, and delivers panoramic summit views over fjords, mountains, and the Gulf of St. Lawrence. Not for the faint of heart.

What the Hike Is Like

The trail begins in boreal forest and ascends steeply to an exposed highland plateau. At the summit, the panoramic view is extraordinary: fjords, the Long Range Mountains, and on a clear day the Gulf of St. Lawrence. The summit of Gros Morne Mountain offers panoramic views of the park and the surrounding landscapes. The sense of accomplishment from conquering one of the highest peaks in Newfoundland is genuine.

Start Early

Begin by 7-8am. The summit plateau is exposed and weather can change rapidly. Bring waterproof layers even on a sunny morning. Check Parks Canada trail conditions before attempting in shoulder season.

What to Bring

Waterproof hiking boots, waterproof jacket, warm mid-layer, hat and gloves for the summit, at least 2 litres of water per person, sufficient food, sunscreen, and insect repellent for lower trail sections.
