How to Book the
Western Brook Pond Boat Tour
BonTours operates it. Book before everything else. Here is exactly what to know before reserving.
The Western Brook Pond boat tour is Gros Morne’s most celebrated experience and its most in-demand booking. It sells out daily in July and August. Book it first before accommodation, before other activities, before finalising your Gros Morne itinerary dates.
How to Book
Operated by BonTours. Book in advance directly with BonTours. Tour season: mid-June to mid-October. Multiple daily departures in peak season. Adult ticket: approximately $60-70 CAD. The Parks Canada annual pass covers park entry but does NOT cover the boat tour this is a separate purchase.
What the Experience Involves
The full Western Brook Pond experience requires approximately 4.5 to 5 hours including the 3 km approach walk from the parking area to the boat dock (30-45 minutes each way through boreal forest) and the approximately 3-hour boat tour through the landlocked fjord. 600-metre cliff walls on both sides, cascading waterfalls, and near-complete wilderness silence. Moose, bald eagles, and black bears are regularly spotted along the cliff edges.
| Component | Time Required |
|---|---|
| Parking area to boat dock (walk) | 30-45 min each way (3 km through boreal forest) |
| Boat tour on the fjord | ~3 hours |
| Return walk to parking | 30-45 min |
| Total time required | 4.5 to 5 hours |
This is not an exaggeration. Determine your boat tour departure date and time first. Then book your Rocky Harbour or Norris Point accommodation around those dates. Then book your rental car. The tour books out weeks ahead in peak season and last-minute availability does not exist in July and August.
Planning Your Gros Morne Day Around the Tour
On boat tour day, arrive at the Western Brook Pond parking area at least 30 minutes before the start of your walk to the dock allow extra time if travelling with children. The morning walk provides excellent wildlife viewing. After the tour, the remaining afternoon works well for a drive to Trout River for fresh seafood dinner.
