The Shoreline Heritage Trail also known as the Madrock Trail or the Bay Roberts Shoreline Heritage Walk is a stunning coastal loop trail winding along the rugged Atlantic shoreline of Bay Roberts, Newfoundland. Stretching between 5 and 8 kilometres depending on your chosen trailhead, it is one of the most scenically diverse and historically rich hiking experiences on the Avalon Peninsula. Free to access year-round, it is an ideal destination for families, birdwatchers, snowshoers, and anyone who loves dramatic coastal landscapes.
The trail begins at the end of Water Street in Bay Roberts, where multiple trailheads and parking options are available. From the moment you step onto the path, the Atlantic Ocean announces its presence. Rugged exposed cliffs drop sharply to the sea, small rocky beaches tuck into protected coves, and wide grassy meadows open onto sweeping bay views. The trail surface varies beautifully throughout packed earth, coastal rock, and open headland walking give each section a distinct character. The famous Mad Rock, a striking coastal formation jutting into the bay, is one of the trail’s most photographed landmarks.
The area’s geological history is on full display throughout the hike. Ancient rock formations, exposed by centuries of Atlantic weather, tell the story of a coastline shaped over millions of years. Hikers with an eye for history will also spot the remains of old outport settlements along the trail corridor crumbling foundations, stone walls, and the outlines of fishing stages reclaimed by meadow grass, offering a tangible connection to the families who once lived and worked along this shore.
Bay Roberts itself is a community rich in historical significance. The Cable Building once the nerve centre of international telegraph communications still stands in town. The trail’s proximity to attractions like the Road to Yesterday Museum, the Christopher Pratt Gallery, and local dining at Madrock Cafe and Baccalieu Trail Brewing Co. makes this an easy full-day destination from St. John’s. The trail is open year-round and is particularly popular for snowshoeing in winter, birdwatching in spring, and whale watching in summer.
The Shoreline Heritage Trail is one of those hikes that surprises you at every turn. The coastal cliffs are dramatic and the views of the bay are breathtaking, but it’s the small details that stay with you the ruins of old buildings half-hidden by meadow grass, the sound of the Atlantic crashing below, and the moment Mad Rock comes into view around a headland. The variety of terrain keeps it endlessly interesting. We finished with lunch at Madrock Cafe right in town, which made for a perfect day out from St. John’s.

I’ve been walking the Shoreline Heritage Trail for years in every season and it never gets old. In summer, you can spot humpback whales from the clifftops and seals hauled out on the rocks below. In winter, it’s magical on snowshoes with fresh powder on the meadows and the bay completely still. The trail is well-signed and easy to follow from the Water Street trailhead. After your hike, stop by the Road to Yesterday Museum for an excellent look at the town’s telegraph history. A true Bay Roberts gem that deserves more visitors.

We visited in early June and the wildflowers along the meadow sections were spectacular. The trail has a wonderful mix of exposed clifftops and sheltered coastal forest that gives it real character. We did the longer 8 km version and found it well-suited to our pace without being too strenuous. The historical plaques and signage are a nice touch and gave us a lot to talk about as we walked. The Cable Building in town is worth a visit afterwards fascinating piece of history. Some sections near the cliffs are exposed and can be windy, so pack a jacket.
