UNESCO World Heritage Site
L’Anse aux Meadows

The only confirmed Viking settlement in North America, dating to approximately 1000 AD. Reconstructed turf longhouses with costumed interpreters, an Interpretive Centre, and the archaeological grounds where actual Norse remains were found. Open June to early October. Parks Canada entry.

Icebergs and Whales
St. Anthony

St. Anthony sits at the tip of the Northern Peninsula where the Strait of Belle Isle channels both icebergs and feeding whales in spectacular concentrations from May through July. Northland Discovery Tours offers boat tours combining icebergs and whales. Orca sightings are possible from this location.

Scenic Drive
The Viking Trail

Route 430, 489 km from Deer Lake to L’Anse aux Meadows through Gros Morne. The great northern highway past the Arches Provincial Park, Port au Choix National Historic Site, and through communities that have lived from the sea for centuries.

Natural Formation
Arches Provincial Park

Remarkable natural sea arches carved from Cambrian-era dolostone on a gravel beach on the Viking Trail. Free, worth a 30-minute stop. One of the most photogenic natural formations on Route 430.

National Historic Site
Port au Choix

Port au Choix National Historic Site on the Viking Trail preserves archaeological finds from Maritime Archaic and later Indigenous cultures dating back 5,500 years. One of the most significant archaeological sites in Atlantic Canada.
