Butter Pot is an absolute gem. The summit view is everything the hype promises — you feel like you can see the entire Avalon from up there. I hiked it in early October and the fall colours were breathtaking. The forest section is beautiful and shaded, the bogs in the middle add a unique Newfoundland texture, and then suddenly you break out onto the open rocky barrens near the top. Keep your eyes open for moose near the ponds. I spotted two on the way back. Wear solid waterproof boots and bring more layers than you think you need.

Did this with my two kids (8 and 12) on a summer morning. The 12-year-old was racing ahead the whole time and even the 8-year-old made it to the top with encouragement. The trail is well-marked with pink blazes and very clear throughout. There is a good mix of terrain so it never gets boring. The views at the top made the kids genuinely speechless for about 30 seconds, which is an achievement. Pack a picnic for the summit. Park is easy to find right off the Trans-Canada.

A fantastic hike and a must-do if you are visiting St. John’s. The 45-minute drive from the city is easy and the park is well-maintained. We saw a bald eagle circling just before the final summit push, which was a highlight. The boggy section in the middle is quite wet after rain so waterproof footwear is essential, not optional. The summit plateau is bigger than expected with multiple great spots to sit and look out. Gives you a real sense of just how vast and wild the Avalon interior is. Would easily do this again.
