About Brigus

The Avalon’s Most
Charming Hidden Village

Brigus is the kind of place that gets under your skin. A small historic community of about 500 people on the western shore of Conception Bay, approximately one hour west of St. John’s along the Baccalieu Trail, it feels simultaneously like the real Newfoundland of the past and a genuinely alive, warm community of the present.

The town is famed across the province for three things above all else: the Brigus Tunnel a hand-carved passage through solid rock cut in the 1850s by one determined man named Thomas Danson; Hawthorne Cottage, the National Historic Site and former home of the legendary Arctic explorer Captain Bob Bartlett; and the Brigus Lighthouse Trail, a 6.7 km coastal walk to one of the Avalon’s most photogenic lighthouses.

Add in the beloved Annual Brigus Blueberry Festival each August, stone walls that predate Confederation, colourful heritage homes, and a harbour that looks exactly like you imagined Newfoundland and you have one of the most rewarding day trips on the entire Avalon Peninsula.
