Charming Hidden Village
Brigus is the kind of place that gets under your skin. A small historic community of about 500 people on the western shore of Conception Bay, approximately one hour west of St. John’s along the Baccalieu Trail, it feels simultaneously like the real Newfoundland of the past and a genuinely alive, warm community of the present.
The town is famed across the province for three things above all else: the Brigus Tunnel a hand-carved passage through solid rock cut in the 1850s by one determined man named Thomas Danson; Hawthorne Cottage, the National Historic Site and former home of the legendary Arctic explorer Captain Bob Bartlett; and the Brigus Lighthouse Trail, a 6.7 km coastal walk to one of the Avalon’s most photogenic lighthouses.
Add in the beloved Annual Brigus Blueberry Festival each August, stone walls that predate Confederation, colourful heritage homes, and a harbour that looks exactly like you imagined Newfoundland and you have one of the most rewarding day trips on the entire Avalon Peninsula.

Hike to the
Brigus Lighthouse
The Brigus Lighthouse Trail is the reason many visitors first make the hour’s drive from St. John’s. The trail begins in the village and follows the coastline out to the iconic red and white lighthouse on the headland above Conception Bay a 6.7 km out-and-back route that takes 2–3 hours at a comfortable pace.
The trail passes through forested sections and opens to dramatic clifftop views at regular intervals. Whales are frequently spotted in the waters below during summer, and in May and June, icebergs drift past in the bay. The lighthouse itself is one of the most photographed landmarks on the Avalon Peninsula its red and white facade against the sky and sea is unmistakable.
The trail is free, open year-round, well-maintained, and suitable for most hikers. Dogs are welcome on leash. No restroom facilities on the trail itself use facilities in the village before setting out.
