La Manche Provincial Park
& the Suspension Bridge

One of the most rewarding day trips from St. John’s La Manche Provincial Park sits about 75 km south of the city on the Irish Loop and combines dramatic coastal scenery with a hiking trail that leads to the park’s crowning jewel: a long suspension bridge swaying above a beautiful forested river valley.

The trail to the bridge passes through the ruins of La Manche Village, a community abandoned in the 1960s after a devastating storm. The ghostly stone foundations and interpretive panels tell a haunting and moving story of resilience and loss. The forest around the trail is lush and diverse, and in June the wildflowers are extraordinary.

La Manche also offers backcountry camping, excellent trout fishing, and connections to the East Coast Trail for those wanting to extend their adventure along the spectacular Avalon coastline. Combine with the Colony of Avalon at Ferryland for a full Irish Loop day.

UNESCO World Heritage Site

Mistaken Point —
560 Million Years in the Rock

At the very southern tip of the Avalon Peninsula, the rocks hold a secret that took half a billion years to create. Mistaken Point Ecological Reserve contains the world’s oldest known fossils of large, complex multicellular organisms 560 million years old. These extraordinary imprints in the ancient seafloor offer a direct window into the emergence of complex animal life on Earth.

Designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the reserve is accessible only by guided tour departing from the Edge of the Avalon Interpretation Centre at Portugal Cove South. The hike to the fossil site leads across windswept barrens above dramatic coastal cliffs a setting as alien and primordial as the fossils themselves.

🌍

UNESCO World Heritage Site

Mistaken Point is one of only four UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Atlantic Canada, recognized for its extraordinary scientific significance the fossils here changed our understanding of the evolution of animal life on Earth.

Bell Island —
Avalon’s Most Surprising Day Trip

Just 20 minutes by ferry from Portugal Cove–St. Philips, Bell Island packs an extraordinary amount into its 34 square kilometres. At its heart is the #2 Mine Tour a guided descent into the world’s largest former submarine iron ore mine, where original tunnels, machinery, and equipment from the mining era (1895–1966) remain eerily intact underground.

Bell Island also has a WWII story unlike anywhere else in Canada in 1942 German U-boats attacked the island’s ore carriers in Conception Bay, the only enemy attack on Canadian soil during the war. The Seaman’s Memorial at Lance Cove Beach honours those lost. Above ground, the lighthouse, coastal trails, sea cliffs, and the legendary Dicks’ Fish N Chips round out a perfect Avalon day trip.
