Signal Hill is exposed and can be very windy even in summer. Always bring a windproof jacket, wear sturdy footwear for the trails, and dress in layers. Fog can roll in quickly from the Atlantic be prepared for all conditions.

Signal Hill is spectacular year-round but the best visiting window is May to September. Iceberg and whale season runs May to July combine a Signal Hill visit with clifftop wildlife spotting for an unforgettable morning.

Washrooms are available at the Visitor Centre and parking lot. There is a small gift shop and interpretive displays inside Cabot Tower. No food is available on site bring snacks and water, especially for the North Head Trail.

The main parking area and viewing platform near Cabot Tower are accessible. The North Head Trail involves uneven terrain and steep sections that are not wheelchair accessible. Contact Parks Canada for accessibility information.

Best Time to Visit Signal Hill

Signal Hill is open year-round but each season offers a completely different experience.

Dec – Feb
Dramatic and wild. Snow-capped clifftops, crashing waves and very few visitors. A raw, moody experience dress warmly and watch for ice on the trails.

Mar – May
Iceberg season begins in May spot towering bergs drifting past from the clifftops. Wildflowers begin to appear. The Visitor Centre reopens and trails are at their quietest.

Jun – Aug
The best all-round time. Long days, whale watching from the cliffs, the Military Tattoo on weekends, and all facilities open. Can be busy on sunny days arrive early.

How to Get to Signal Hill

Signal Hill is just 5 minutes from downtown St. John’s and easy to reach by car, on foot or by taxi.

The easiest way. Free parking is available at the Signal Hill parking lot near Cabot Tower. From downtown St. John’s, follow Signal Hill Road the drive takes about 5 minutes. A rental car also lets you combine Signal Hill with Cape Spear and Quidi Vidi.

On Foot from Downtown
Signal Hill is walkable from downtown St. John’s β€” a 20–30 minute uphill walk from the harbour area. The route is scenic and passes through residential streets. Wear comfortable shoes as the incline is steep in places.
