🗺️ The 10-Day Newfoundland Itinerary Overview
Ten days is the sweet spot for a first-time visitor to Newfoundland who wants to experience the province’s major regions without the exhausting pace of a 7-day rush. As a result, you can give each destination the time it deserves two nights in the Bonavista Peninsula, two full days in Gros Morne, and a relaxed Southern Shore day rather than a quick pass-through. Driving around Newfoundland including major scenic routes and stops typically takes 10–14 days, making this itinerary the minimum that truly does the island justice.
The 10-day route follows a logical west-heading progression: start in St. John’s, work north and east through Bonavista and Trinity, drive west through Terra Nova and Twillingate, then continue west to Gros Morne. Furthermore, rather than backtracking to St. John’s, the recommended exit is to fly home from Deer Lake Airport (YDF), 30 minutes from Gros Morne saving a 7-hour return drive and adding a final evening in Rocky Harbour.
The most efficient routing for this itinerary is to fly into St. John’s International (YYT) and fly home from Deer Lake Regional Airport (YDF), 30 minutes from Gros Morne. Air Canada serves YDF from Toronto and Montreal. This eliminates the 7-hour drive back across the island on the final day, and consequently gives you a full final day in Gros Morne rather than a transit day. Alternatively, the Marine Atlantic ferry from Port aux Basques 2 hours south of Gros Morne is an excellent option after the 2025 50% fare reduction.
📍 Phase 1 The Avalon Peninsula (Days 1–3)
The Avalon Peninsula gives you everything Newfoundland is known for within 90 minutes of St. John’s icebergs, humpback whales, puffins, a vibrant capital city, and some of the most dramatic coastal scenery in North America. Consequently, spending 3 nights here makes more sense than rushing through in 2.
Arrive YYT, collect rental car, and spend the day exploring the city. Signal Hill’s North Head Trail delivers Narrows views and possible iceberg sightings in May–June. Jellybean Row, The Rooms museum (90 min), Quidi Vidi Brewing, and George Street for the evening. Book Mallard Cottage or Chinched Bistro for dinner.
The flagship Avalon day. Cape Spear (easternmost North America), whale and puffin boat tour from Bay Bulls into Witless Bay Ecological Reserve (~2 hrs, $60–$80/person book ahead for July/August), then the Ferryland Lighthouse Picnic for lunch (pre-order basket). Colony of Avalon archaeological site in the afternoon. Drive back along Route 10 stopping at coastal viewpoints.
Use the extra Avalon day for whichever option best fits your interests. Petty Harbour (20 min south) is a beautifully preserved fishing village with excellent coastal walking. Cape St. Mary’s Ecological Reserve (1.5 hrs SW) delivers Northern Gannet colony viewing at close range one of the most spectacular seabird sites in Canada. Bell Island (20 min ferry from Portugal Cove) offers the underground No. 2 Mine tour genuinely fascinating Atlantic Canadian industrial history.
📍 Phase 2 The Bonavista Peninsula (Days 4–5)
The Bonavista Peninsula is one of the most historically and scenically rewarding regions in Newfoundland. Two nights allows you to cover both Bonavista town and Trinity without rushing, and additionally makes time for the Skerwink Trail one of the best coastal hikes in Atlantic Canada.
Leave St. John’s early via Trans-Canada west then Route 230 north approximately 2.5 hours to Bonavista. First stop: Elliston Puffin Viewing Site (20 min from Bonavista town) puffins nesting within metres at no cost. Afternoon: Cape Bonavista Lighthouse for panoramic headland views and possible iceberg sightings in May–June. Evening: Ryan Premises National Historic Site for Newfoundland fishing history. Two Whales Coffee in Port Rexton (~10 min from Trinity) for an afternoon caffeine stop.
Drive 30 minutes to Trinity. Morning: the Skerwink Trail a 5.3 km coastal loop delivering some of Newfoundland’s most spectacular ocean scenery, with sea stacks and Atlantic panoramas. Takes 1.5–2 hours. Afternoon: Trinity town walk, Trinity Historical Society museum, and a Trinity Eco-Tours zodiac or boat whale watching departure on Trinity Bay. Dinner at the Twine Loft (57 High Street, Trinity) exceptional local seafood. The Artisan Inn in Trinity and Fisher’s Loft Inn in Port Rexton are two of Newfoundland’s most celebrated boutique properties.
📍 Phase 3 Central NL & Twillingate (Days 6–8)
The central phase covers Canada’s most easterly national park and the iceberg capital of the world giving Twillingate two full days that the 7-day itinerary cannot. Furthermore, with two nights in Twillingate, you have time for both the coastal hiking trails and a full boat tour without feeling rushed.
Drive 1.5 hours west from Trinity to Terra Nova National Park Canada’s most easterly national park, where the North Atlantic Ocean reaches deep into ancient boreal forest. Spend the morning on the Terra Nova Coast Trail (approximately 4 km, 1.5 hrs) for coastal inlets and boreal forest views. Rent kayaks from the visitor centre for a Newman Sound paddle in the afternoon. Wildlife including moose, caribou, and black bear are regularly seen along park roads. The squid roll phenomenon squid washing onto Sandy Cove beach in late summer is worth asking park staff about. Continue to Twillingate after the park, arriving in early evening.
Full day in Twillingate the town that earns the title Iceberg Capital of the World because over 50% of all icebergs passing Newfoundland drift through these islands. Morning: Long Point Lighthouse trail for panoramic Notre Dame Bay views and shore-based iceberg and whale spotting. Check IcebergFinder.com before leaving for current positions. Afternoon: Iceberg Man Tours from 50 Main Street the signature Twillingate experience. Getting within metres of a massive iceberg from a small boat is genuinely unforgettable. Combined iceberg and whale watching departures available. Phone: 709-884-2242.
Second Twillingate morning: the French Beach Trail and Twillingate Coastline Trail between French Beach, Spiller’s Cove, and Codjacks Cove 2–3 hours of some of the best coastal hiking in Central Newfoundland, with consistent iceberg corridor views. Prime Berth Fishing Museum for cultural context. Afternoon: drive southwest toward Deer Lake and Gros Morne approximately 2.5 hours. Auk Island Winery produces Newfoundland fruit wines worth a quick tasting stop before departure.
📍 Phase 4 Gros Morne National Park (Days 9–10)
Gros Morne National Park is UNESCO World Heritage Site status for good reason a dramatic convergence of fjords, ancient mountains, exposed mantle rock, and boreal coastal communities unlike anywhere else in Canada. The 7-day itinerary barely skims it; 2 full days in Gros Morne is the minimum to experience its key attractions properly. Furthermore, the park is so vast that two days still leaves significant hiking territory unexplored, leaving a compelling reason to return.
The two unmissable Gros Morne experiences. Morning: Western Brook Pond Boat Tour a 2.5 km walk through boreal forest leads to a landlocked freshwater fjord with 600-metre cliff walls, cascading waterfalls, and total wilderness silence. The 3-hour boat tour is considered one of the most spectacular natural boat trips in Canada. Book well in advance the tour sells out daily in peak season. Mid-afternoon: The Tablelands. Drive south to Woody Point and hike the Tablelands a 4 km return trail across exposed Earth’s mantle, the geological formation that earned Gros Morne its UNESCO designation. The rust-coloured peridotite rock is toxic to most plant life, creating an otherworldly barren landscape unlike anything else in the province. Allow 2 hours. Trout River village, 30 minutes south, offers fresh seafood for dinner.
The final morning offers a choice based on fitness level and departure time. Gros Morne Mountain the park’s highest peak at 806 metres is a full-day hike (16 km return, 7–8 hrs) that rewards fit hikers with extraordinary panoramic views across the Gulf of St. Lawrence and the Long Range Mountains. However, for travellers with afternoon flights from Deer Lake, the Lobster Cove Head Lighthouse trail (3 km loop, easy, 1 hr) and a morning in Rocky Harbour is a better-paced alternative. Green Gardens Trail, Baker’s Brook Falls, and the Discovery Centre in Woody Point are excellent half-day options. Drive to Deer Lake Airport (30 min from Rocky Harbour) for departure.
Rocky Harbour is the main visitor hub with the widest range of accommodation. Additionally, Woody Point offers a quieter, more characterful alternative closer to the Tablelands. The Norris Point B&B area is popular with hikers targeting Gros Morne Mountain via the Lookout Hills trailhead. Book accommodation in Rocky Harbour 2–3 months ahead for July and August the park is increasingly busy and options are limited.
