Where the North Atlantic reaches deep into the heart of the boreal forest Canada most easterly national park is a wild, layered world of coastal inlets, 80 km of trails, glassy ponds, and star-filled skies.

National Park
Where the Ocean Reaches Into the Heart of the Forest
Terra Nova National Park is unlike any other national park in Canada. Established in 1957 Newfoundland very first national park it sits on the eastern side of the island where long fingers of the North Atlantic Ocean reach deep into ancient boreal forest. Rocky headlands, sheltered coastal inlets, glassy freshwater ponds, and rich bogs create a mosaic of ecosystems that rewards every kind of visitor.
The park’s crown jewel is Newman Sound, a spectacular ocean inlet that no other Canadian national park can match for direct, accessible exploration. Kayak its calm waters alongside bald eagles, spot seals hauled out on the rocks, and watch jellyfish drift below the surface. Then trade the boat for hiking boots on 80 kilometres of trails ranging from gentle shoreline strolls to challenging backcountry routes.
At night, the park transforms. Terra Nova is a designated Dark Sky Preserve the absence of light pollution reveals a sky so thick with stars it looks painted. The Trans-Canada Highway runs right through the park, making this one of the most accessible wilderness escapes in Atlantic Canada no special expedition required.

The Clearest Skies
in Eastern Canada
In 2018, Terra Nova National Park was officially designated a Dark Sky Preserve by the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada one of only a handful of national parks to receive this honour. The combination of the park’s remote location, clean Atlantic air, and near-zero light pollution creates conditions for stargazing that are extraordinary by any standard.
On clear nights, the Milky Way appears as a dense, glowing band stretching across the full sky. The park’s two official observing sites at Ochre Hill and Blue Hill are elevated with 360° horizon access, and paved parking lots make them easily accessible even for casual visitors.
The campgrounds at Newman Sound and Malady Head are equally impressive lying in your tent listening to loons on the pond while a river of stars moves overhead is one of the great experiences of any Newfoundland trip.
