Terra Nova
National Park
The complete guide to Terra Nova National Park Newman Sound sea kayaking, the Coastal Trail, Sea to Summit, Dark Sky Preserve stargazing, oTENTik glamping, backcountry water taxi, wildlife, and everything you need to plan your visit to Newfoundland’s eastern national park.
🌲 Why Terra Nova National Park?
Terra Nova National Park sits on the Trans-Canada Highway 2.5 hours west of St. John’s making it the most accessible national park on the island and a natural overnight stop on any cross-island road trip. But accessibility is only part of its appeal. The park’s defining feature is Newman Sound a breathtaking ocean inlet where the forested hills plunge directly into the sea, offering what Parks Canada describes as effortless, direct access to exploring a genuine ocean fjord found in no other Canadian national park.
Furthermore, Terra Nova punches above its size for experiences: 80+ km of trails ranging from easy boardwalk walks to the challenging Sea to Summit hike, a designated Dark Sky Preserve with exceptional stargazing conditions, world-class sea kayaking on Newman Sound, backcountry campsites accessible only by water taxi, and one of the richest coastal wildlife environments in Atlantic Canada. Consequently, a single night at Terra Nova typically leaves visitors wishing they had budgeted two.
🌊 Newman Sound The Heart of Terra Nova
Newman Sound is the beating heart of Terra Nova a breathtaking ocean inlet where the park’s forested hills plunge directly into the sea. No other Canadian national park offers this kind of effortless, direct access to exploring a genuine ocean fjord. Launch a kayak from the Visitor Centre, book a guided excursion with Happy Adventure Tours, or hop on the park’s water taxi to reach remote campsites.
Sea stars, urchins, crabs, and lion’s mane jellyfish populate the waters below, while bald eagles circle overhead. The Narrows, at the innermost reach of the sound, is a particularly magical stretch sheltered, wildlife-rich, and utterly serene. Additionally, the water taxi service provides access to seven backcountry campsites that are otherwise reachable only by multi-day trail. Kayak rentals are available at the Visitor Centre without advance booking though Happy Adventure Tours guided excursions should be reserved ahead in peak season.
The intertidal zone along Newman Sound is one of the richest on the Atlantic coast of Canada. From the water, sea stars and urchins are clearly visible in the clear water, and lion’s mane jellyfish some with bells over 50 cm drift through the deeper channels. Bald eagles are commonly spotted from the kayak. The Coastal Trail along the shore provides excellent elevated viewpoints over the sound for those on foot. Moose are frequently seen at the water’s edge at dawn and dusk.
🥾 Hiking Trails
With over 80 kilometres of maintained trails, Terra Nova accommodates every fitness level from a 20-minute boardwalk amble to a full-day challenging coastal hike.
A beautifully maintained boardwalk trail through boreal forest and bog habitat. Outstanding birdwatching boreal chickadees, warblers, and woodpeckers throughout. Family-friendly and accessible. One of the most rewarding short walks in the park.
The park’s most popular trail follows the Newman Sound shoreline with outstanding ocean views, intertidal zone access, and regular bald eagle sightings. The trail passes several rocky headlands with superb photography vantage points over the sound.
Rewards hikers with panoramic views of Clode Sound and Bread Cove from an elevated rocky summit. One of the finest viewpoints in the park exceptional at sunset. The trail passes through diverse boreal habitat before breaking into open rocky terrain at the summit.
A trail through boreal forest to a picturesque waterfall a good option for families or those seeking a shorter objective. The forest corridor is excellent for wildlife observation, and the falls make an excellent picnic spot in summer.
Terra Nova’s most demanding trail a full-day hike from the ocean edge to the highest accessible viewpoint in the park. For experienced hikers only. Delivers extraordinary views of Newman Sound, Clode Sound, and the surrounding boreal landscape from the summit. Start early and bring sufficient food and water.
Seven backcountry campsites provide multi-day trail options for experienced hikers. Alternatively, the park’s water taxi service from the Visitor Centre provides direct access to backcountry sites without hiking the full approach. Book backcountry permits through Parks Canada.
⭐ Dark Sky Preserve Stargazing
Terra Nova National Park is a designated Dark Sky Preserve one of the best stargazing locations in Newfoundland. The park’s position in Central Newfoundland, away from the light pollution of St. John’s or Gander, delivers exceptionally clear night skies. The backcountry is described as some of the darkest sky in all of Newfoundland and Labrador, offering ideal conditions for observing the Milky Way, aurora borealis, and deep sky objects.
The Ochre Hill and Blue Hill observing sites within the park are elevated with excellent horizon access ideal for telescopes or simply reclining to take in the full sky. Additionally, Parks Canada runs Campfire Circles and Outdoor Theatre evening programs through the summer season, with some specifically focused on astronomy and night sky observation. The aurora borealis is visible from Terra Nova on clear nights during periods of high solar activity particularly in spring and fall.
Check moon phase before planning a stargazing night a full moon significantly reduces the visibility of fainter objects even in a Dark Sky Preserve. New moon periods in August and September are optimal: warm enough to be comfortable, skies often clear, and no moon to compete. Download a free star chart app (Stellarium or SkySafari) before entering the park cell coverage at the observing sites can be limited. The Space Weather Canada aurora forecast is available online for borealis planning.
