The Stiles Cove Path is one of the most spectacular and rewarding hikes in the East Coast Trail network — a 14 kilometre point-to-point journey between the communities of Pouch Cove and Flatrock on the Avalon Peninsula, just north of St. John’s. With dramatic coastal geology, multiple waterfalls, sea caves, wildlife-rich headlands, and a rich sense of remote Newfoundland wilderness, it is a trail that rewards every hour of effort with genuinely unforgettable scenery.
From the Pouch Cove trailhead at St. Agnes Church, the path heads north through a landscape shaped by the unrelenting forces of the Atlantic. Almost immediately, the trail begins delivering on its reputation: rugged sea cliffs that plunge directly into the ocean, exposed headlands where the wind arrives salt-laden off the open water, and small sheltered coves hidden below the clifftops. The sound of the ocean is a constant companion throughout the entire route.
Among the trail’s standout features are its waterfalls, which cascade down the coastal slopes and into the sea at several points along the route. These are most dramatic in spring and after heavy rain. The sea caves and rock ledges that punctuate the coastline invite exploration at lower tides, offering extraordinary close-up views of the geological formations that make this section of the Avalon coastline unique. Interpretive content along the trail helps hikers understand the history and natural science of the landscape they are walking through.
Wildlife is abundant on the Stiles Cove Path. The sight and sound of the birds, waves, and wind provide a peaceful backdrop throughout. Seabirds nest on the cliffs, bald eagles patrol the headlands, and seals haul out on the rocks below. In summer, humpback whales are frequently visible offshore from the higher lookout points. The forested inland sections also harbour moose and foxes.
As a point-to-point trail, you will need to arrange a car shuttle between Pouch Cove and Flatrock before you start. Parking in Pouch Cove is available at St. Agnes Church. The Flatrock end of the trail is accessed from Hickeys Lane. The trail is maintained by the East Coast Trail Association — a registered charity; consider supporting their work at eastcoasttrail.com.
One of the finest hikes I’ve ever done on the entire East Coast Trail. The section between Pouch Cove and the first major lookout is extraordinary. The sea caves near the halfway point took my breath away. You are essentially walking along the edge of the world here. The waterfalls are unexpected and beautiful. We spotted two humpbacks from the northern headland. Plan a full day, start early from Pouch Cove, and sort your shuttle beforehand. This trail deserves far more attention than it gets.

The Stiles Cove Path was everything I hoped it would be and more. The variety of terrain is remarkable for a single trail: open cliff walks, sheltered forest, rocky cove descents, and open meadow. The waterfalls in the first third of the route are genuinely beautiful. We went in June and the wildflowers were spectacular. Birds everywhere. The pink and white ECT blazes are easy to follow throughout. Bring plenty of food and water as there is nothing along the route. The shuttle logistics are the only tricky part but it is absolutely worth it.

A genuinely challenging and rewarding full-day hike. The 14 km distance is manageable but there are some steep scrambles near the sea cave sections that caught us off guard. Wear solid boots with ankle support. The views from the high headlands are unbelievable. We started in Flatrock and walked to Pouch Cove which worked well. The sound of the wind and waves on the exposed sections is something I’ll remember for a long time. The East Coast Trail Association does exceptional work maintaining this trail.
