The Chance Cove Coastal Hiking Trail is a scenic hidden gem on the Avalon Peninsula a compact but rewarding loop trail that winds through dense boreal forest and along a rugged Atlantic coastline, revealing hidden beaches, dramatic sea caves, and sweeping views of Trinity Bay. Well-maintained with clear signage, benches at viewpoints, and stair access down to sheltered coves, it’s a trail that punches well above its size.

The trail begins at the Chance Cove parking lot and almost immediately rewards hikers with coastal views. The path combines two contrasting worlds: shaded forest sections with ferns and wildflowers underfoot, and exposed headland walks with the Atlantic stretching away to the horizon. The highlight of the loop is Green Head a bluff-top lookout offering panoramic views across Trinity Bay and the dramatic stair descent to Big Cove, a secluded pebble beach where seals often haul out on the rocks and seabirds nest in the cliffs above.

At just 3.3 km with about 55–65 minutes of walking, this trail is perfect for families, casual hikers, and photographers who want big coastal scenery without a big time commitment. The geological character of the trail is extraordinary: ancient sea stacks, layered rock formations, small sea caves, and the distinctive rust-orange and grey geology of the Newfoundland south Avalon coast. Bring binoculars whales are occasionally spotted offshore from the headlands during summer months.

The trail is free to access year-round, with parking available at the trailhead. No washroom facilities on the trail plan accordingly before you start.

One of my favourite quick hikes on the whole Avalon. It’s short but the scenery packs such a punch. The Green Head overlook is genuinely spectacular standing on that bluff with Trinity Bay spread out below you is unforgettable. The stairs down to Big Cove are steep but very well-built, and the beach itself is magical. We saw three seals lounging on the rocks and a pair of bald eagles circling overhead. Bring snacks and sit on the beach for a while it’s that kind of place.

We did this as a family with two kids (6 and 9) and it was perfect. The loop is manageable for younger kids, the signage is excellent, and there are benches along the way so you can stop and rest. The sea caves section had the kids completely transfixed. The forest parts are shaded and cool even on warm days. Parking right at the trailhead made it very easy. Definitely do the full loop don’t skip the Big Cove stairs, that beach is worth every step.

Beautiful trail the photos don’t do justice to how dramatic the cliffs look in person. Went in early October and the light on the rocks was incredible. The coastal section has some slippery spots after rain so wear boots with grip. No washrooms on the trail so plan ahead. Dogs are allowed on leash and mine loved the beach section. Short enough that you can do it and still have energy left for other things. Will be coming back in summer to try and catch the whales.
